Are there any side effects for taking colchicine long term? Should I change to taking allopurinol ?

I am a 50 years old male good health. Since my first gout attack, I have been taking colchicine 500 gm daily for the last 10 months, and have not had a second gout attack, except for some minor pains in the knee caps. which usually happens after a night of alcohol drinking. I drink up to half a bottle of whisky and red wine each week. My uric acid is high. I was treated for kidney stones several years back.

    The most common side effects of colchicine involve the stomach and bowel and are dose related. These include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. One of the most worrisome side effects of colchicine is that it can damage the bone marrow causing severe anemia and seriously low white blood counts, thereby increasing the risk of infections. All patients taking colchicine long-term require blood count monitoring. Colchicine can also cause hair loss, weakness, and nerve irritation…. gout is at least twice as effective at lowering uric acid levels as the standard drug allopurinol. .. . Febuxostat has a different chemical structure than colchicine.
