  1. There are 2 ways to get rid of tophi.

    One is surgery. Used when the tophus has grown to a point where it is severely restricting joint movement, or breaking through the skin, or causing other tissue damage.

    The other way is to dissolve them by lowering uric acid below 6mg/dL. Dissolving tophi can take many months. Allopurinol is the most common medication for lowering uric acid, but there are others, including benzbromarone, sulphinpyrazone, and febuxostat.

    It is important to have regular uric acid tests to make sure uric acid is low enough to dissolve tophi.
